According to clinical laboratory improvement act (CLIA), 88 ,USA, Pathology Laboratory means a facility for the biological, microbiological, hematological, biochemicals, biophysical, cytological, pathological, immunohematological, serological, or other examination of materials derived from the humans body for the purpose of providing information for the diagnosis, prevention for treatment of disease (or impairment of)or the assessment of the health of human beings. these examination also include procedure to determine or otherwise describe the presence or absence of various substances or organism in the body.
Facilities of only collecting for preparing specimen (or both) or only serving as a mailing service and not performing testing are not considered labortories.

The term laboratory medicine refers to the discipline involved in the selection, provision and interpretation of Diagnostic testing that uses primary sample from patients. laboratory medicine feld includes clinical service administration, Research and teaching.
